VIDEO: Late Model Restoration’s SVE Silicone Radiator Hoses for 1986-1993 Mustang

I don’t know what it is with some of us, but for some reason, the coolant hoses are the most neglected serviceable components on a car. We just tend to drive until they pop, risk overheating, then walk to the closest parts store and grab the cheapest, no-name hose and expect it to fit correctly. Checking the hoses is just as important as maintaining the belts and changing the oil.

The coolant hoses are fighting three things (at least): Heat, pressure, and flexibility. For all of you chemistry and physics geeks, you know that enough heat for long enough can change the chemical composition of anything, radiator hoses included. Over time, the constant heat cycling can cause them to become brittle and crack.

Also, it’s a known fact that a pressurized cooling system has a higher boiling point, and add in the flexing for some hoses that bridge the gap between the engine and stationary items like the radiator and heater core, and well, now you have a pretty good idea of how hard these hoses have to work.

Having said that, there are plenty of upgrades that can be had. One such is Late Model Restoration‘s SVE Matte Silicone Radiator Hoses for 1986-93 Fox Mustangs. They’re composed of silicone rather than rubber; making them much more durable and more resistant to heat and pressure with the additional heat resistant fibers woven into its construction.

Available in matte blue, or matte black, they look like new hoses all the time. Landan Durham performs the installation on a subject Fox Mustang. Included in the kit are upper and lower radiator hoses, heater supply and return hoses, water pump to heater tube hose, and bypass hose from the water pump to thermostat; some trimming may be required. LMR also recommends picking up a new heater core flow restrictor and clamp kit. Other than that, the whole process is a simple remove the old and replace it with the new.

Once installed, these new hoses will look great, and last a long time—but continue to inspect them on a regular basis! Check out LMR’s website for these and additional pieces.
